On Friday April 17th at 7pm a Blue Mass was celebrated at St. Ignatius of Antioch in Yardley to honor the work of First Responders including law enforcement officials, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel. Celebrant Msgr. Samuel E. Shoemaker was assisted by Deacon Michael Cibenko and the guest homilist was Rev. James A. Lyons , Pastor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish. Representatives from numerous police, fire and EMS organizations were in attendance.
The term “Blue Mass” is a reference to the color of the uniforms worn by many of these professions and dates back to 1934. Particularly in the wake of the events on September 11, 2001, the Blue Mass is a way to recognize the sacrifice of police, firefighters and EMS personnel and to remember those who have given their lives in service to their communities. The Knights of Columbus has taken an active role in sponsoring Blue Masses in the communities in which it serves, to join with the community in expressing appreciation to these dedicated professionals for all their selfless work.
The mass was organized and sponsored by the Fr. McCafferty council of the Knights of Columbus whose efforts were led by Eric Miller, Moss Jacobson, Chuck Dolan, John Noto, Mike Cibenko and Anthony Liccione.
The mass was covered by the Bucks County Courier Times and that story and video is found here:
