You can start to make a difference today. Educate yourself on the issues and share what you’ve learned with your friends and family.Understand that people don’t choose to be homeless. Circ*mstances beyond their control, for a variety of reasons, have brought them to this way of life.If you’re comfortable, smile and say hi to the homeless person you often see on the corner, or on your way to work. Make eye contact if you can and say a few words to acknowledge and reaffirm their humanity. Most importantly, we can make a difference together. Please give the largest and most meaningful gift you can that reflects your values and your desire to join CUCS as part of the solution to homelessness.cucs.org/donate.#cucsnyc #homelessnyc #supportivehousing #makeadifferencedecember #transitionalhousing

Nothing Is Free...Not Even Doing Good, at Least in my World! You often hear the phrase: "It takes a village." After working in the nonprofit industry for several years, I do wonder if it does take a village, or is it just a small group of company owners who care enough about social change, that they "become the village."Building a nonprofit from ground zero into one than can affect change across the United States takes a lot more than just a village - it takes private and corporate partnerships. We all know, nothing is free, not even doing good! Our Vets on Track Foundation is making an impact in the homeless veteran arena by furnishing homes for those transitioning into permanent housing from homelessness. We give these unsung heroes a reason to want to go home, and not return to the streets. While we recently furnished our 1,000th home in Virginia, there is need all across the country. Our quest is to open Divisions of our Foundation in every state in the union - but we can't do it alone. We need the "Village," no matter what that looks like. The American people or Corporate America or a combination of both.We need to build a partnership that will help us continue moving forward and affect change. If your company is looking for a "cause" to get behind, then help us work harder towards ending homelessness and suicides. Become a partner and a member of our "village."www.vettrack.org #military #homelessness #suicideprevention #housing #honor #pride #selfesteem #selfworth #dignity #veterans #veteranshelpingveterans #veteransupport #firstresponders

As I start my last week at St Mungo's it feels like a good time to reflect on the last few years. This week we published the Kerslake report, with the commission saying that the Government would not meet its target to end rough sleeping by 2024. And, in fact, our teams on the front line are seeing more and more people forced into homelessness and rough sleeping as the cost of living crisis takes hold and the chronic shortage in genuinely affordable housing continues. This feels particularly heartbreaking after seeing first hand the incredible progress made over COVID, when good quality accommodation was made available to EVERYONE, with support services able to come to the clients and decent funding from the Government. Seeing how hard our teams worked to keep everyone safe was humbling - people worked themselves to the ground, but did it because finally progress was being made and the numbers of people rough sleeping were the smallest they'd been in years. This can't be wasted. The Government needs to take notice of the Kerslake report. Housing benefits need to cover the bottom 30% of rents. Funding for homelessness services needs to be long-term, not just sporadic pots of money.Working at St Mungo's I have met so, so many amazing people. People who work all hours to support people away from homelessness. But without the Government making these changes we will only continue to see these numbers rise.
